The Delhi Metro will start work on the short but vital Kalindi Kunj-Botanical Garden stretch — which will give Noida a direct line to IGI airport, Gurgaon and several south Delhi areas — by August-end.
The Noida authority and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding for the 3.9-km elevated line, to be built at a cost of R874 crore and completed by 2016. An estimated 48,500 commuters are expected to use this section by 2017.
This line will be part of the under-construction 33km Janakpuri West-Kalindi Kunj corridor — which has stations coming up at Jamia Milia Islamia University, Kalkaji, Okhla, Nehru Place, IIT, Hauz Khas, RK Puram, Munirka, Vasant Vihar, IGI domestic terminal, Palam and Janakpuri, among others.
The Kalindi Kunj-Botanical Garden line will have two stations in Delhi — Kalindi Kunj and Okhla bird sanctuary.
On the Noida side, Botanical Garden station will also serve as the NCR’s first interchange station, linking commuters to the currently operational Blue Line (Noida City Centre to Dwarka Sector 21) and the Janakpuri West-Botanical Garden corridor. This station, which sees 14,000 commuters daily, is projected to get an interchange load of 97,780 passengers in 2016.
The DMRC is already constructing a 574-metre bridge across the Yamuna for the line to Botanical Garden — the fourth bridge across the river for a Metro project.
“As the MOU is signed, DMRC will begin work on the Noida stretch. After selecting an agency to carry out civil construction, work is expected to begin on the ground by August-end,” said Noida authority CEO Rama Raman.
“We have no restrictions on working outside Delhi. There is a need to take the Metro deeper into NCR towns like Noida or Ghaziabad to provide better public transport facility,” said DMRC MD Mangu Singh.
According to DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal, the process of selecting an agency began two months ago and one will be selected “in the next few days”.
